MLK Day: Anybody can be great; anybody can serve

The third Monday in January is a national observance in the U.S. to honor the memory and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.  This day can considered as a holiday and time off from work.

Or it can signify a day dedicated to serving others.

In recent years, the First Family participated in a service project at Washington, DC Central Kitchen.  They volunteered alongside veterans, some of whom are continuing their service through AmeriCorps. Vice President Biden has served hot lunches to guests at SOME (So Others Might Eat) in DC.
But you needen’t be presidential to serve.  According to the Corporation for National and Community service @ MLKDay.gov,  any type of service is encouraged, particularly projects that:
  • connect participants to ongoing service throughout the year
  • have a lasting impact
  • build the capacity of an organization to launch new projects, mobilize volunteers, or generate resources
The most successful projects connect to the life and teachings of Dr. King and include time to reflect on his teachings

Still scratching your head about what to do to honor this day?  Or how to explain this day to children?

Lavar Burton offers a beautiful video explanation for children. He begins with King’s life as a youngster and gently shows the inequalities Dr. King experienced as a child that led him to take a stand as an adult.

Watch the video with your young ones

How might you be great and serve on MLK Day?
What additional suggestions or resources can you add?

Loved reading this Cat. This is the first time I have come across this public holiday of yours. I love what it stands for and what it encourages people to do on the day itself. Thanks for opening my eyes to something new across the pond
