Crackers walks me home in a blistery wind. I can’t seem to use my cane right, I’m all out of sync with the stepping and the tapping, so I just grip her arm. Plus, the sidewalk is icy, and I’m nervous about falling.
 
“I’m not joking,” Crackers says. “You can’t tell your Mom. If she finds out about Matt and Beverly, she’ll have a canary. She finally warmed up to the idea of you having a black friend, but once she knows Matt and Beverly are an item, she’ll never let Beverly back in your house."
